The fire explorer post teaches the youth about the fire service, emergency medical services, and the public safety arena. Guided by fire department members who have become advisors, the students learn not only by book, but also by hands on practice. Education is key in development. The explorer starts off following the guidelines set forth by the Boy Scouts of America. Incorporated in those are the State of Illinois educational standards for fire and emergency medical services. Following the curriculum for the Illinois Department of Health for Emergency Medical Technician - Basic and the curriculum for Firefighter II. The Explorers activities with the fire department expand as the explorer "graduates" through the accomplishment levels. As these levels progress, the explorer is allowed to perform station radio duties, ride along privileges, and in station duty work. At all times, the explorer is under direct supervision by and advisor or department officer. This insures the safety and that the guidelines are followed. After the graduation system is met and the explorer is of 19 years of age, the opportunity to become a department member may be offered. We currently have a number of members who started out as explorers. The explorers also assist in social functions. From camping, scheduled outings, to fire station sleep in programs, assist the explorer in developing team work and pride. Each explorer is issued a set of turn out gear and is required to utilize it at each training function.
